Radioactive Iodine (I-131) Treatment for Hyperthyroidism in Cats

Radioactive Iodine (I-131) is a highly effective, advanced treatment for hyperthyroidism in cats. This one-time therapy is considered the treatment of choice for cats that have been recently diagnosed or for those that are difficult to medicate, even after years of diagnosis.

Pre-Treatment Consultation

Before scheduling the I-131 treatment, a consultation with one of our veterinarians is required to ensure there are no contraindications that would make your cat unsuitable for the procedure. Once cleared, we will proceed to schedule the treatment.

The cost for the I-131 treatment is $2,200, which does not include any additional services, medications, or pre-treatment assessments.

Pre-Treatment Requirements Include:

Recent Bloodwork: Bloodwork (including a T4/thyroid test) must have been sent to a laboratory within 30 days of the consultation.
Three-view Chest X-rays: These can be completed during the consultation or at your primary veterinarian’s office. If completed externally, records must be sent to us prior to the consultation.
Current Rabies vaccination or rabies vaccine titers or a waiver of ineligibility from your veterinarian.
Treatment Process

Drop-off Schedule: Treatment drop-offs are only available on Monday mornings. A specific appointment time will be provided to ensure we have adequate time to review your pet’s care.
Injection: The radioactive iodine injection is administered subcutaneously between the shoulder blades.
Post-Injection Care: Following the injection, a trained staff member will care for your cat by feeding, cleaning, and maintaining their kennel twice daily (morning and evening) until Thursday.
Follow-up and Release: On Thursday, we will perform a thyroid scan to ensure the level of radioactivity being emitted by your pet is below the state maximum. If the levels are within the appropriate range, we will contact you for pick-up in the afternoon. Should the levels be slightly elevated, your cat will remain in our care for an additional day at no extra charge.
Daily Updates: You will receive daily updates and a photo of your cat during their stay.
Additional Requirements

Food and Medications: Please bring your cat’s own food, as well as any medications or supplements they are currently taking. Any unused food or medications will be returned to you.
Comfort Item: We ask that you provide an old blanket, towel, or t-shirt that can remain with your cat in the kennel. This item will provide comfort by carrying the familiar scent of home but will not be returned.
Video Overview: Below is a video providing an overview of the radioiodine ward where your cat will stay after receiving the injection.

We are committed to providing your cat with the highest level of care throughout their treatment process.
